No — and it's not trying to. CoLoci gets you to an 80–90% answer fast: a valid NPC, a workable encounter, a rules citation you'd have spent 20 minutes finding. That last stretch — the voice, the timing, the read on your players — is irreplaceable, and it's yours. CoLoci just clears the grind so you arrive at that moment with more energy to spend on it.
Never. CoLoci runs entirely locally via Ollama. Your PDFs, your campaign notes, your generated content — none of it touches a remote server. There is no CoLoci cloud. The LLM runs on your hardware. Your campaign stays yours, full stop.
Any model you can pull in Ollama — llama3, mistral, gemma, qwen, phi, and more. You can have multiple models downloaded and switch between them at any time. Use a fast, lighter model for quick lookups and a larger, more capable one for complex NPC generation — it's entirely up to you.

CoLoci currently runs on macOS and Windows. 8 GB RAM is enough to get started with lighter models. 16 GB RAM is where CoLoci really opens up — larger models, faster responses, better output. CoLoci has specialist structural knowledge for World of Darkness, D&D 5e, Pathfinder, and Shadowrun — meaning it understands how those books are laid out, not just what they say. For other systems, it can still index and search your PDFs and generate content, but without system-specific parsing. More systems are actively in development.

ChatGPT and Claude are trained on the internet — which means generic D&D, popular settings, and a lot of confident hallucination about niche systems. CoLoci works from your indexed books, so answers are grounded in what your edition actually says, not what the model thinks it probably says. It also means your campaign notes, houserules, and setting details stay on your machine and out of someone else's training data. And there's no subscription — one payment, unlimited use, no usage caps.
If you're already comfortable wiring up Ollama and a vector store, you could build something similar yourself — CoLoci isn't claiming local inference as the differentiator for you. What it saves you is everything around the model: PDF ingestion and OCR for scanned books, a retrieval pipeline already tuned for tabletop source material rather than generic documents, a sources panel so you can verify what was retrieved, and a GM-facing UI for running multiple campaigns at the table — instead of a weekend (or more) gluing those pieces together yourself.
CoLoci retrieves actual passages from your indexed books before generating anything — so the model is working from your source material, not guessing. That substantially reduces hallucination compared to asking a general-purpose AI from memory. That said, no local model is infallible: treat CoLoci's output the way you'd treat a well-read player's rules recollection — useful, usually right, worth a quick sanity check on anything that'll affect a critical session moment. The sources panel shows exactly which pages were retrieved, so you can verify in seconds.
Your license covers up to 3 machines. If you reinstall on the same machine, CoLoci recognises it and reissues your license automatically — no need to contact anyone. If you're moving to a new machine and have hit the limit, email us and we'll reset an activation. Licenses don't expire, so there's no urgency.
Both work. CoLoci automatically detects whether a PDF contains selectable text or scanned page images. Text PDFs index quickly — a 300-page corebook takes a few minutes. Scanned PDFs go through OCR first, which takes longer (roughly 10–20 minutes for a full book) but produces the same fully searchable result. The OCR engine is built in — no extra software to install.
PDF only, for now. Most commercial RPG sourcebooks are distributed as PDFs, so this covers the majority of use cases. ePub and other formats are on the roadmap. In the meantime, many tools can convert ePub or Word to PDF — and the result indexes just fine.
Licenses are per person — one license covers your own machines (up to 3). If the other GMs in your group want to use CoLoci, they'd each need their own license. Given there's a 50-generation free trial with no time limit, everyone can try it properly before committing.
